When translating a newspaper article into English, one must be aware that different conventions apply. In the German quality press, an article's subject is often not revealed until the close of the first paragraph, whereas Anglo-American journalists are encouraged to open with a punchy, in-a-nutshell lead pointing to what follows. The German article is not badly written. Many discerning German readers actually expect to be kept waiting in this way. But a translation which fails to invert the first paragraph may prove unpalatable to an English-speaking readership, in turn potentially diminishing its impact.
